Inland waters subject file, 1901-1982.

Series 4 of record group 85-37 consists of inland water subject file for the years 1901-1982. Consists of reports, correspondence, data sheets, drawings, maps, publications, and photographs. The records were used by the Department for information gathering purposes. Some pamphlets were created to help citizens with construction projects and property investment. Of note is the material on flood control and flooding as well as the water levels of inland lakes.

The Michigan Geological Survey was created by Public Act 20 of 1837. Its purpose was to conduct a geological and mineralogical survey of the state. The state legislature appointed Douglass Houghton the first state geologist (1837). In 1921, the state legislature established the Department of Conservation, and the Michigan Geological Survey became part of that department (Public Act 17 of 1921).
